Simon poured the last of the yellow rice powder onto the design Lydia had drawn in grease pencil on the marble floor of the work room. Stepping back, he examined the intricately patterned mandala made of red, blue, white, and yellow. He'd also mixed some of the powders, allowing him to color sections of the drawing in purple, green, orange and brown.

No marble floor showed through the dense powder. It was ready for Heather's dedication ceremony.

Ordinarily, the house's protections would be enough to protect such a simple ritual. But since the entity had already tried to breach their defenses at least twice, Simon was taking no chances. He put the jars of rice powder away in the study, and took out four white candles and a jar of sanctified salt. As soon as Heather was ready, he'd cast a protective circle around her.

A moment later, Lydia led Heather into the study. She was wearing Lydia's white silk robe, and a white cotton headband held back her brown hair. With a last whispered admonition to relax, Lydia stepped aside, delivering Simon's apprentice into his keeping.

He smiled at the nervous girl. "Today's your big day, Heather. After your dedication, you'll join the ranks of the Guardians."

"I'm ready. I think."

"Have you abstained from alcohol?"

"Yes."

"Meat and fish?"

"Yes." Her expression turned wistful. "I made excuses for the past two weeks to avoid meeting Rick and Keith for pepperoni pizza night."

Simon chuckled. "That's why it's called a sacrifice, Heather. Have you avoided fried grains?"

"Yes. I convinced the girls in my apartment that I was on a new diet—boiled potatoes and fruit. Two of them joined me in the diet, and between the three of us, we've lost thirteen pounds in the last two weeks."

He'd known Heather was clever, but this proved she'd be able to handle the double life of a Guardian with ease. Better than he'd handled things with Beth.

Focusing his mind on the task at hand, he asked Heather the final question. "Have you abstained from sex?"

"Yes." She sighed. "Although I think Rick thinks I'm cheating on him."

"Because you wouldn't sleep with him?"

"Because I've been dodging him. I knew if I saw him, I'd want to drag him off to bed. Not being able to do it just made me think about it even more." She shook her head. "You wouldn't understand."

Simon suspected Heather would be shocked to learn how well he understood her problem. He felt the same way around Beth. He didn't know how he was going to live in the same house with her and still keep his thoughts focused on his magic rather than on making long, luxurious love to Beth.

He brought his attention back to Heather. "You showed much wisdom. It will be needed in the years to come as you perform your duties as a Guardian. Pluck the flower of wisdom, and let it guide you on your path."

Heather followed his gaze to the bowl on his desk where a lotus blossom floated. She
